Who I Am

I’m Joanne Barker and I’ve written about health for more than 25 years, most recently for Boston Children’s Hospital and the MGH Institute of Health Professions. I’ve written for low-literacy audiences, concerned parents, healthcare executives, and a lot of other people as well. As a volunteer for Massachusetts Literacy Volunteers, I meet with an adult student once a week to help develop her writing skills.

HEALTH COMMUNICATION FOR THE PEOPLE

From autism to down syndrome, I write about health issues in a human voice. My career is committed to providing scientifically sound information about confusing health issues so people may understand their options, and possibly themselves, better.

WRITE IT FOR THE WEB

How do you keep people on your site when a world of distractions is one click away? I write for the web without dumbing things down. If you need an editor who can hone your message for an overloaded audience, I can help.

OTHERWISE

My creative non-fiction has appeared in Punctuate, The Drum, and Boston Magazine. If I’m not writing, I’m probably out swimming, rowing, gardening, or telling stories at a Moth Storyslam.
